This course is an ideal starting point if you would like to work in the Construction and Civil Engineering industry. Covering all key subject areas providing a good grounding upon which to start your career. It also offers progression onto the Level 3 Civil Engineering course. The Construction and Civil Engineering sector is vibrant and dynamic and this course ensures learners cover key skills, knowledge and behaviours relevant to the sector.

Course Content

The course consists of 4 mandatory units plus a further 2 optional units to be completed within your year of study.

The mandatory units are:

  • Construction Technology
  • Construction and Design
  • Scientific and Mathematical Applications for Construction
  • Sustainability in Construction

Learning Methods

Learning is by assignments, presentation work, taught sessions, projects, research and site visits within the Construction and Civil Engineering industry.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through summative internal and external assignment work and formatively during taught session activities.

Progression Opportunities

On successful completion the course you could progress onto Level 3 in Civil Engineering or Rail Engineering at Newcastle College

Career Opportunities

There is a wide range of careers within the Civil Engineering and Construction sectors and these will discussed during taught sessions.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs minimum level 3 or equivalent level which include Maths, English and ideally a Science. 

You may also have to successfully complete and interview and assessment process before entry onto the course.

For applicants whose first language is not English you must achieve an IELTS score of 5.5 or above

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
