New Asian cookery course to ignite creative flame among budding entrepreneurs

Newcastle College has teamed up with some of the region’s most high profile Asian entrepreneurs to offer budding chefs a free course in Asian Food and Hospitality.

The four week intensive course is designed to give unemployed people an opportunity in the hospitality industry. Currently being advertised through Job Centre Plus, students will learn how to cook up everything from Sweet Potato Chat to an exciting Salmon dish called Malarbari Salmon in the college’s impressive industrial standard kitchens, with guaranteed job interviews for any successful candidates at the end of the course.

The course blends experience and innovation from industry and education to teach the tricks, tool and techniques needed to be a success in a working kitchen, or to simply impress friends and family with a five star vindaloo.

As well as getting their hands dirty in the kitchen, students will also receive guidance on how to run a successful business in the Asian hospitality sector.

Imparting their vast knowledge of both Asian cuisine and North East enterprise to the course are multi-award winning restaurateur Jalf Ali, who runs Newcastle-based Asian street food restaurant Dabbawal, and serial entrepreneur Ammar Mirza, who runs business consultancy AmmarM, among other interests.

Ammar Mirza said: “The course is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who has been tempted to take their Asian cooking skills to the next level. The Asian hospitality sector has a fantastic tradition here in the North East and the course will help to maintain this by developing the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

The facilities at Newcastle College’s Lifestyle Academy have helped to inspire a long list of award winning chefs, including Lewis Morrison, 19, who is currently studying a Diploma in Professional Cookery at the College and who recently won the Future Chef of the Year award at this year’s Salon Culinaire in Newcastle, and Abel Petho, 18, who recently won the National Junior Curry Chef Competition.

Jalf Ali said: “Students on the course will get a first class learning experience, with industry standard facilities that will give them the confidence to try their hand at more adventurous recipes. I’m really excited about the prospect of developing new Asian cookery talent in the North East and seeing what traditions and modern twists students bring to the table.”
