Overview

This level 2 Science course is designed to develop basic science and laboratory skills and is an ideal entry point in gaining qualifications in applied science.  You will cover topics equalavant to GCSE Science in Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as Psychology and Forensics. The course is practical based with opportunities to improve skills in Science, English and Maths. You will develop technical lab skills specifically linked to science-based employment. You will also enhance your skills in biology, chemistry and physics and gain experience of work. Previously, students have designed and carried out science experiments in local primary schools, providing exciting lessons to young children, gaining valuable experience in teaching and science communication. Students regularly visit employers to understand the demands of the science industry and to see how science is applied in practice. Visits have included Thomas Swan, Piramal and Nestlé. Students have enjoyed field trips to The Eden Project in London and the STEM conference at The Discovery Museum.

Course Content

Students will study the Level 2 Gateway Extended Certificate in Applied Science and Technology which includes the following subjects: The Living Body, Chemistry & Our Earth, Energy & Our Universe, Investigating a Crime Scene and Investigating Human Behaviour.

Learning Methods

This course is taught through a mixture of classes, lab practicals and project work. There are also some field trips and company visits. This is a 1 year full time course in college for four days a week and you are also expected to do assignments in your own time.

Assessment Methods

This course is completely coursework based which includes assessed practicals however you will sit exams if you are studying GCSE/FS English and/or Maths.

Progression Opportunities

Using the skills you’ve learnt on this course and the fantastic links to employers, you will stand in good stead to progress onto a science related degree or go directly into employment. Students who successfully complete this course with a satisfactory grade, attitude and interview can apply to study the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Applied Science or Level 3 Access to HE course.

Career Opportunities

You could work in science based industries, in careers such as laboratory work, school technicians, medical technicians and analysts.

4 GCSE's grade 2 (E/F) or above including Science, English and Maths.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1.
