Overview

This course is delivered at Newcastle Aviation Academy based at Newcastle International Airport. The course is designed to meet the needs of industry by producing aircraft maintenance engineering graduates equipped with the necessary technical knowledge, skills and personal and professional qualities to be successful in the exciting and rewarding world of aircraft engineering. The course is mapped to and embeds the knowledge requirements detailed in the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 66 category B1.1 (large commercial) aircraft maintenance engineering licence syllabus. This course will give you all of the theoretical knowledge, practical training and hand and maintenance skills required. The course offers the opportunity to obtain an EASA Part 147 Basic Training Course Certificate of Recognition which reduces the amount of maintenance organisation work experience required for a licence application from five to two years. The EASA licence material is fully embedded throughout the degree programme to give you the best possible chance of success.

Who is course for

The programme is suitable for engineering, maths or science students who wish to specialise in aircraft maintenance engineering. It will develop professional engineers with the multidisciplinary skills and ability to analyse current and future aircraft maintenance engineering problems. The programme aims to develop skills, understanding and knowledge of aircraft and maintenance engineering and the range of modules embeds EASA specific knowledge and assessment strategies as well as key skills and competencies required by the aviation industry.

Learning Methods

You will develop a number of vocational skills in order to become independent learners. Learning methods are flexible, varied and include practical workshops, practical on aircraft skills, assignment work, reports, projects, simulations, portfolios, presentations, MCQ and time constrained essays.
 

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods include exams and controlled assessments, laboratory experiments, written reports, technical specification reviews, literature review, group work, computer based assessments, problem-solving exercises, data interpretation exercises, project work and portfolios.

Progression Opportunities

On achievement of the honours degree students can either commence their career working towards becoming a fully B1.1 licensed aircraft engineer in the aviation industry or progress to higher level degree, MSc/MEng.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of the qualification offers excellent career opportunities worldwide and there is a growing market for permanent and sub-contract work in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul of military and commercial aircraft. Previous successful students have progressed to a wide range of careers with manufacturing companies, commercial airlines, air-taxi operators, flying schools, the armed forces and VIP outfitting operators.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 80 UCAS Tariff Points in engineering, maths and/or science related qualifications such as; A-levels, BTEC Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Level 3 Access to HE Diploma (Merit), Advanced Apprenticeship.

Applicants must have achieved grade C in GCSE maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.

Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.

Applicants for whom English is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or the nationally recognised equivalent.

Additional Course Costs

Students studying the BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering will need to supply safety footwear and overalls for use when working in the workshops. All other PPE will be supplied.

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2018 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at gov.uk/studentfinance or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
