Biotechnology is an exciting and varied branch of science. Its very name implies diversity and application and students who study this subject see first-hand how the science they know, and have yet to learn, is used in our everyday lives.
Society is constantly changing.
Our demands for new medicines and technology means that science needs to constantly change with it to meet those needs.
The overall aim of this BSc(Hons) Applied Science (Biotechnology) is to consolidate your enthusiasm and aptitude for biotechnology and its application in different contexts, particularly within industry and research, while expanding your knowledge into other areas of science.
The course was developed as a result of an increasing demand from local pharmaceutical and biotechnology related companies and this continues to be an area of increased growth. The course will develop the specialist knowledge required to work in the fields of bioscience and biotechnology, alongside the softer skills required to be a contributing part of the work place. You will expand your knowledge of cell biology, clinical and diagnostic enzymology and genetic modification and carry out practical work, including gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reactions (PCR). As well as this specialist knowledge, you will have the opportunity to improve your communication skills, giving presentations, writing reports and taking part in poster sessions.

You will learn in our recently redeveloped £18 million Parson Building. You will not only develop your technical skills but also improve your soft skills, such as communication and interpersonal skills, delivering your work in a variety of ways including reports, essays, presentations and poster sessions.

Course Content

Year 1 Cell Biology and Microbiology

This unit will provide a basic understanding of Cell Biology, Molecular genetics and Microbiology. You will study a variety of topics such as ultra-cell structure, cell transport, structure and function of DNA plus the growth of microorganisms.
The unit is practically based and uses laboratory experimentation to inform learning.

Basic Concepts in Chemistry

The aim of this module is to provide the basic principles of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, enabling you to apply these chemical principles throughout all areas of chemical analysis.

Biological Molecules

This unit will cover organic chemistry including carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Students will look at metabolic pathways, enzyme structure, function and kinetics

Introduction to Biotechnology

This module will include the principles of separation, identification and quantification of biological molecules, protein purification, enzyme assays and gel electrophoresis



Maths for Scientists
This module will introduce and develop a wide range of mathematical and statistical skills which will enable you to properly collate, present and analyse statistical and mathematical data generated in the course of your studies.

Personal Development

You will develop skills which enable you to be reflective, this will allow you to assess you progress and identify areas that you need to develop.

Academic Development

This module develops your academic skills to enable them to meet the requirements of study for higher education courses in a variety of contexts and to develop the specialist study skills relevant to your course of study and professional aspirations

Work Related Learning
This module is intended to allow you to identify, address and experience the demands of the science industry within negotiated boundaries, completing the project under the supervision of the module leader. You will carry out a project in the workplace.



Year 2

Biochemical Interactions

This module is concerned with the application of chemical methods, techniques and theories to the study of biological processes at a molecular level, for example, Membrane Chemistry - Cell signalling, Receptor-ligand binding, Signal transduction and Drug targeting

Immunology and Pharmacology

This module will include:
Response to Infection, antibody structure and function, antigen processing and presentation, MHC complex, tolerance and auto-immunity
And immunoassay techniques
It will also cover pharmacodynamics, drug biochemistry, biological mode of drug action,
dose response selectivity and specificity,
and drug metabolism & pharmacokinetics

Production and analysis of Proteins

This will be a practically based module, examining methods of protein production, and their subsequent analysis.



Ensuring Quality – legislation and statistics
This module will cover quality standards used in industry, such as GLP, ISO 9001, ISO 17025 and cGMP.
The module will include the statistics required to ensure quality is maintained.

Work based learning

The aim of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of an appropriate work context and apply your knowledge and skills to a work place issue or problem which you have identified within the workplace.

Professional Development
You will develop the transferable skills and professional requirements necessary for your proposed career. This will include preparing a portfolio demonstrating how the meet a job specification and a mock interview for this job.

Year 3
New and Emerging Science
This module is designed to enable you to explore emerging scientific research and technologies, assessing the potential value of the next generation of products for society and for business
Advanced Analytical Techniques
This module is designed to provide you with background theory to advanced analytical techniques and instrumentation used in industry. These skills will improve your employability

Science and the Environment
In this module, you will develop an appreciation of the analytical approaches required in environmental analysis of air, water and soil samples. It will provide the you with knowledge of state-of-the-art analytical techniques available to solve/assess current environmental problems and also emerging technologies in environmental analysis.

Year 4
Laboratory operations and management
This module is designed to provide you with the tools to supervise the operation and management of a laboratory. These will include the soft skills required by the sector.

Honors Project

This module aims to develop your skills in research, analysis, and project management via an extended vocationally-relevant project. You will investigate a well-defined problem and, through both practical and literature-based research, analyse the context and nature of the issue, then develop, critically appraise and justify strategies to address the problem.


Assessment Methods

you will be assessed through a variety of methods including reports, essays, presentations and poster sessions

Your BSc(Hons) Applied Science (Biotechnology) will provide you with a wealth of skills and knowledge that will be relevant to many employment sectors. You will have the skills to be employed in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, or in a medical or agricultural research establishment, as technicians or in production.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff Points at A-level, BTEC QCF Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Merits in Level 3 Access to HE Diploma, Advanced Apprenticeship. *
*Must be in Science subjects.
Applicants must have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.
Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or the nationally recognised equivalent.
