This is for those who love football and want a job in sports coaching. The course involves professional training by Newcastle United Foundation and study at Newcastle College. You will study for 25 hours per week and participate in football training and competitive games.

Alongside this you will study additional qualifications that include FA Level 1 Award, Emergency First Aid Award, Safeguarding Children Award and a bespoke BTEC (Level 2 or 3) in Sports Coaching, Sports Development or Sports Fitness (designed by NUFC Foundation and the College). Also included is work experience and mentoring, where you’ll work alongside Newcastle United Foundation coaching staff and gain free entry to monthly coach the coach clinics. At the end of the programme you’ll be guaranteed an interview with Newcastle United Foundation.

This course is over 1 year and after the first year you will gain a L3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport that is worth 60 credits.

Course enrichment

• Students can take part in a two week Sportilia trip to Italy which involves watching Serie A and B football matches, trips to the Italian FA and playing competitive football matches.

Course Content

You will be working alongside Newcastle United Foundation coaches and get varied experience of football coaching.

You will study a variety of units which could include the following:-

Principles of Anatomy and Physiology , Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport , Psychology of Sport, Exercise, Health and Lifestyle, Sports Coaching, Fitness, Training and Programming, Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Sports Nutrition.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through practical observation, oral questions, written projects/assignments and discussions.

Progression Opportunities

If you successfully complete the course, you can progress to any of our Sport/Fitness-related Foundation
This qualification is also an acceptable entry requirement for Degree/Foundation Degree courses run at other
Higher Education institutions both in the region and across the country.

You will receive support from your tutor in terms of your application to University as well as having the opportunity to attend visits to academic institutions and Open Days.

Career Opportunities

There is a guaranteed interview on completion of the course with Newcastle Foundation.You could find employment in areas such as the sports and leisure industry, sports coaching in sports clubs and schools and health and fitness clubs. 

Entry Requirements

You will need at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths or a Level 2 Diploma with a Merit/Distinction grade profile and Level 2 English and maths, subject to an interview.

£150 for Newcastle United Foundation football kit.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.
