Course Content

The Diploma in Management Accounting is CIMA’s first level of the professional qualification and consists of four exams, outlined below. The Operational level exams can be completed in any order and most students study one subject at a time. The Operational Case Study is taken after you have achieved the three module exams.

E1: Organisational Management covers:

  • Introduction to organisations
  • Managing the finance function
  • Managing technology and information
  • Operations management
  • Marketing
  • Managing human capital.

You will learn how to:

  • Analyse issues and events in the global business environment.
  • Develop an understanding of the structure and principles sustaining the operational functions of the organisation.
  • Align and mobilise all its parts to implement strategy.

P1: Management Accounting covers:

  • Cost accounting systems.
  • Budgeting.
  • Short-term decision making.
  • Dealing with uncertainty through decision analysis.

You will learn how to:

  • Use budgeting as a means of short-term planning to implement the strategy of the organisation.
  • Analyse information of costs, volumes and prices to take short-term decisions on products and services.
  • Appreciate the impact of risk to these decisions.

F1: Financial Reporting and Taxation covers:

  • Regulatory environment for financial reporting and corporate governance
  • Financial accounting and reporting
  • Management of working capital, cash and sources of short-term finance
  • The fundamentals of business taxation.

You will learn to:

  • Produce financial statements for both individual entities and groups with reference to international financial reporting standards.
  • Manage cash and working capital within the business.
  • Understand and apply basic principles of business taxation.

ICS: Operational Level Integrated Case Study

This three hour computer based exam covers the syllabus from all three of the above modules. It will consolidate the learning to reflect real life situations. You are issued the case study in advance of the examination to prepare.

  • A Personal Online Tutor who will support you through your studies.
  • Learner view is where you can access your course site, set targets, view tutor notes and access assessments grades.
  • Access to (Online learning developed and written by CIMA)


Assessment Methods

You will be assessed by computer based exams at an official CIMA test centre.

This also includes the case study, where you will learn how to apply the knowledge you have gained in the three modules to reflect real-life work situations.

Progression can be made to the Level 6 CIMA Professional Qualification - Management

Entry Requirements

To apply for this course, you will one of the following:

  • The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting
  • Any relevant qualification which gains you exemptions from the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting (for example: the AAT qualification; a degree in accounting / finance / business / economics
  • Relevant previous work experience

In addition to the standard course fees, CIMA learners are required to pay for the CIMA admission, membership and assessment fees.
