This is a practical, career focused course which introduces you to the different aspects of Art & Design through a wide range of projects.

The projects are all based on research and ideas development, through which you will begin to understand the different subject areas within Art & Design.

You will also be introduced to various techniques and skills through workshop sessions helping you build an art & design portfolio.

Toward the end of the course you will be able to choose specialist subject projects to further refine your portfolio, these will help you progress to the most suitable level 3 course.

Who the course is for

This course is for anyone who wishes to gain a qualification that will support you to progress in the area of Art & Design.

It is particularly suitable if you don’t have many qualifications but want to progress your career in the Creative Industries, as a school leaver.

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the course, you will gain a Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design, awarded by Edexcel.

Course Content

You will study:

  • Contextual References in Art & Design
  • 2D & 3D Visual Communications
  • Using Ideas to Explore, Develop Produce Art& Design
  • Working with Textiles Briefs
  • Working in the Art & Design Industry
  • Working with 3D Design Craft Briefs
  • Portfolio Building

Your course also includes GCSE or Functional Skills as appropriate in English and or Math’s. Possessing these skills will help you to progress in education, training and employment and make a positive contribution in the community in which you live and work.

As well as GCSE & Functional Skills being embedded into all aspects of your course you will receive a dedicated lesson to enable you to develop your skills in the relevant subject area.

Learning Methods

This course is delivered within a class/studio environment; learning will take the structure of a presentation by the lecturer, a related learner activity and then a review process to assess learning before moving on to the next process/task.

Tutors will support progress and give appropriate feedback/guidance. On-line materials will support course delivery.

Assessment Methods

The qualification is assessed by continuous practical assessment via the collection of coursework, assessed against unit outcomes.

Entry Requirements

You will need at least one of the following entry qualifications:

  • BTEC Introductory Diploma or Level 1 Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • 4 GCSEs at grades D-F
  • An equivalent qualification to those above.

If English is not your first language you will also need an IELTS score of 5.5 or above.

In addition to this, you will also need to bring with you to interview a portfolio of relevant project work.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1.
