Overview

Are you passionate about sports coaching or teaching? Are you looking to further your knowledge in this field? Then our Foundation Degree in Physical Education and Sports Coaching will help set you up for a rewarding career. This Foundation Degree will develop your understanding of contemporary coaching and teaching practice. You will be based in the recently developed 18 million pound Newcastle Eagles Arena for both your practical and theory lessons. Our teaching staff all have a range of industry experience, having worked in the sport sector for a number of years. As part of your Foundation Degree, you will have the chance to gain valuable work experience through a work placement with organisations such as Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle Eagles, local schools and colleges.. Throughout your course you will be given the opportunity to expand and develop on industry relevant assessments, which will give you an insight into today’s sport and education sector.

Work Ready Guarantee

As part of our work ready guarantee you will have the opportunity to liase with a range of organisations including: Tyne & Wear Sport, Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle Eagles, North East Partnership SCITT and the Lawn Tennis Association and you will be supported to actively engage with these organisations through sourcing and attending work based placements. You will also be given the opportunity to complete certified coaching qualifications through numerous National Governing Bodies. Previous qualifications include: Level 1 basketball, Level 1 volleyball, Level 1 football, Emergency First Aid, Safeguarding and Coaching Participants with Disabilities.
 

Who the course is for

This Physical Education and Sports Coaching Foundation Degree is suitable for those individuals wishing to study towards a degree and pursue a career in sports coaching, or progress onto teacher training qualifications including Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programmes.

On successful completion you will be awarded a Foundation Degree in Physical Education and Sports Coaching by NCG.

Course Content

Year 1:


 


Introduction to Physical Education and Youth Sport Development

 


 


This module will develop an understanding of children’s physical and social development through physical education and sport. It will explore the current national curriculum and evaluate the impact of PE on young people. It will also outline the role that PE and school sport has within the wider social agenda.


 


Foundations of Sports Coaching

 

You will develop a range of coaching skills including transferable, personal, interpersonal, academic and subject specific skills which will enable you to succeed in your chosen field of sports coaching. This module has been developed in line with the UKCC coaching framework equivalent to level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications.

 

 


Year 2:


 


Differentiation in Disability Sport and the Curriculum

 

 

 

In this module you will look at developing inclusive and effective practices for a range of students with both learning and physical disabilities. You will develop and apply key skills including decision making, adaptability and differentiation strategies to promote and demonstrate safe and ethical practices for individuals with a disability.


 


Applied Research Practice for Sports Coaches and Physical Educators

 

 


You will critique research in the qualitative and quantitative paradigms and will examine advanced methods of data analysis. Students will develop an awareness of different methods for designing research and the different analysis tools available to the sport and exercise scientist.
 

Learning Methods

You will develop relevant soft skills underpinned with theoretical knowledge in order to prepare you for entering the sport or education sector. Learning takes place in classrooms, lecture theatres and Newcastle Eagles Arena practical spaces. You will also participate in lectures, group work and self-directed study. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence. You will learn through a variety of teaching and learning methods including written practical assignments, work-based projects, presentations, peer work and independent study.

Academic progression is available through one of our one-year BSc (Hons) Physical Education and Sports Coaching (Top-Up) degrees
 

Career Opportunities


Career paths range from PE teachers, sports coaches and teaching assistants. Opportunities for employment exist within a range of schools and sport organisations specialising in youth and disability sport. Previous graduates have progressed to work as, community sports coaches, SEN teachers and primary school teachers.



 

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff Points at A-level, BTEC QCF Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Merits in Level 3 Access to HE Diploma, Advanced Apprenticeship.


 


Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.


 


Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.


 


Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or the nationally recognised equivalent.


 


A satisfactory DBS clearance will be required to undertake this programme and must be obtained within the first term of enrolment.

Course Costs

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2019 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at gov.uk/studentfinance or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
