Policing and Criminal Justice Studies - BA (hons) [Top-Up] [Full-Time]

Overview

This one year top up degree is aimed at students who have completed a level 5 (foundation degree) in a relevant topic.

The BA (Hons) in Policing and Criminal Justice Studies programme has been designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to become a Police Constable or undertake a range of roles in policing and the wider criminal justice system. Through market research, findings have highlighted a strong demand for a professional policing based degree with additional modules included to cover the wider criminal justice system.

You will undertake many experiences designed to provide as much “hands on” opportunities within the public and/or third sector, over the duration of the honours degree, some of this will take place through organised activities with the emergency services, and in the local community. It is heavily encouraged for learners undertaking this degree to work as a special constable, volunteer with an organisation that specialises in dealing with those at risk of offending or those that support offenders.

You will be able to be involved in research focusing on your chosen field and will have the chance to participate in conferences. In addition, you will be provided with a wide range of opportunities to develop your understanding of professional policing by engaging with events, volunteering and visits to our industry partners. An expectation of this course is for you to spend a significant period of time outside of normal classroom sessions in further study, including; reading, research and work based learning. The course is delivered by lecturing staff that currently work in the criminal justice system or have experience in the wider criminal justice sector. Staff on the course are best placed to prepare you for a range of roles in the criminal justice sector.

Who the course is for

The BA (Hons) Policing and Criminal Justice Studies programme aims to provide you the student with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be an effective Police Constable or employee within a wide range of roles within the Criminal Justice sector. The programme will provide you the student with a variety of teaching and learning experiences that could further your career. The programme you will

follow will have a strong vocational focus and this will aim to prepare you for work in the Police and Criminal Justice sector.

Learning Methods

You will learn through a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, practical sessions, workshops, guest speakers and visits, independent research and case studies. Learning takes place in classrooms, lecture theatres, sports science laboratory. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence as well as leading real life scenarios.
 

Career Opportunities

With successful completion and satisfactory academic performance, you may decide to apply for or a position within the police force or criminal justice system.

Career opportunities include (not exhaustive); a range of roles in the police, probation, prison service, youth offending, Ministry of Defence Police and the Civil Nuclear Constabulary.

Entry Requirements

This honours degree is a professional and academic knowledge-based degree, based upon the national curriculum for the police constable role. This top up degree is not a direct entry into the police force.

National and local entry requirements would need to be met, and achievement of the degree does not guarantee a successful application.

Once you have joined a force, you must undertake further practice-based learning and assessment, demonstrating competence in your role and complete a two-year probationary period, in line with police regulations. NCUC Entry Requirements

A relevant Foundation Degree or the Level 5 equivalent (HND, Diploma in Higher Education).

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.

Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.

Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or the nationally recognised equivalent

A satisfactory DBS clearance will be required to undertake this programme and must be obtained within the first term of enrolment.
