Overview

This pioneering new course has been designed to prepare students for a career in the fields of Fashion Retail, PR and Brand Marketing, Buying, Styling and Creative Direction. This course has been constructed to meet the needs of a fashion industry which is highly competitive and operates within a constantly changing set of business challenges, including expanding global markets.

You will develop the technique of maximizing productivity in the face of international competition, demanding customers and the ever-changing and evolving nature of consumers’ buying habits and behaviour. The curriculum is also directed towards developing your individual creative and innovative thinking.

Throughout the course the students will be supported to develop their business acumen, achieve their creative potential and to fully realise the practical skills which are increasingly essential for working within the global fashion market place. Applicants to this course will be creative and forward-thinking individuals who are able to demonstrate a global perspective. You will also need to be able to adapt your skills to meet the differing needs of any size or kind of retail environment, whether virtual or physical.

As part of our work ready guarantee we will give you the opportunity to undertake an exciting work placement with organisations such as Top Shop, Urban Outfitters, London Fashion Week, John Lewis and Alexander McQueen, to name but a few. You will also have the opportunity to work on live briefs from industry which will give you an idea of what it is like to work in the sector.

Learning Methods

We aim to provide high quality learning opportunities using a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies. Methods vary from classroom delivery to seminar, case-studies, work-based learning and team learning. Underlying this is a philosophy of initial support leading to greater independence in your skills acquisition and use.
Work experience opportunities and industry-led projects and collaborations are features of the course.

 

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through the outcomes of the modules you will study. A range of practical and theoretical activities will determine your final grades.

Progression Opportunities

Academic progression is available through a specialist subject pathway of our BA (Hons) Creative Enterprise (Top-Up). You could also pursue a career in teaching and progress to study onto a Masters or PGCE qualification.

Career Opportunities

Career paths range from visual merchandisers and buyers, brand managers and range planners. Opportunities for employment exist within a range of in – house design companies specialising in menswear and womenswear and emerging retail outlets with on line stores, Previous graduates have progressed to work for designers and within CAD, in-buying, retail and management roles.

 

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 48 - 64 UCAS Tariff Points at A-level, BTEC QCF Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Pass in Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design).

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.

Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or the nationally recognised equivalent.

Course Costs

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2019 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at gov.uk/studentfinance or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
