This level 2 science course is designed to develop basic science and laboratory skills and is an ideal entry point in gaining qualifications in applied science. The course is practical based with opportunities to improve GCSEs in science, English and maths.

You will develop technical lab skills specifically linked to science-based employment. You will also enhance your skills in biology, chemistry and physics and gain experience of work.

Course enrichment

• Last year students designed and carried out science experiments in local primary schools, providing exciting lessons to young children, gaining valuable experience in teaching and science communication.
• Our links with Procter and Gamble offer exciting work placements and internships whilst CY Partners deliver guest lectures on the careers available within the industry.
• Students regularly visit employers to understand the demands of the science industry and to see how science is applied in practice. Visits have included Thomas Swan, Piramal and Nestlé.
• Students have enoyed field trips to The Eden Project in London and the STEM conference at The Discovery Museum.

Course Content

All students study the following subjects:

  • GCSE Science (Biology, Chemisty, Physics and Controlled Assessment)
  • Extended Certificate in Applied Science (Biology, Chemistry and Maths)
  • Maths and/or English at the appropriate level (GCSE or Functional Skills) 

Learning Methods

This course is taught through a mixture of classes, lab practicals and project work. There are also some field trips and company visits.

This is a 1 year full time course in college for four days a week and you are also expected to do assignments and preparation for exams in your own time.

Assessment Methods

This course is partly exam and partly coursework based which includes assessed practicals.

Progression Opportunities

Using the skills you’ve learnt on this course and
the fantastic links to employers, you will stand in good stead to progress onto a science related degree or go directly into employment.

Students who successfully complete this course with a satisfactory grade, attitude and interview can apply to study the BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Applied Science.

Career Opportunities

You could work in science based industries, in careers such as laboratory work, school technicians, medical technicians and analysts.

Entry Requirements

You should have studied science previously and have at least four GCSE’s at grade D-E, including Science, Maths and English.

Students for whom English is not their first language must have gained an IELTS score of at least 5.5.

You must complete a satisfactory interview and initial assessments in literacy and numeracy.

All places are subject to all criteria being met and completion of an induction programme of learning. Students may be directed to another programme if this one is not suitable.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1.
