Everyone I’ve met at the University Centre, staff and student, have been welcoming and supportive, providing any resources and assistance I needed to help me adjust to life in the UK and thrive academically.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself, your background or why you chose to study at Newcastle College University Centre?

I’m from India, but came to Newcastle College University Centre to study my Honours Degree in Computing. My background is rooted in a deep passion for education and personal growth. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of different software and web development languages, which led me to pursue an Honours Degree in Computing, with a focus on programming and related modules. When it came time to choose a university, Newcastle College University Centre stood out to me for several reasons: namely, the course modules appealed to my interests and offered amply opportunities for exploration and learning; and the University Centre has a great reputation for academic excellence, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

 

What was it about your course that made you want to study a degree at Newcastle College University Centre?

The course content on my Computing degree offered a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of key computing concepts, theories and technologies. Having all these important aspects of the sector as part of one course was essential to me, because I wanted to deepen my understanding of computing and develop practical skills relevant to the industry.

 

What benefits do you think there are in studying at Newcastle College University Centre?

Newcastle College University Centre is known for its excellent academic programmes and dedicated faculty. In my time here, I’ve been able to learn in a supportive environment with small class sizes, have one-to-one tutoring as a regular part of the course, and benefit from all the academic and pastoral resources I needed to help me succeed. The best part for me is how many opportunities the University Centre provides for networking, industry and real-world projects with industry partners, which is unrivalled by other local universities and will really give me a head start in my career. On top of all that, Newcastle itself offers a vibrant cultural scene, diverse community and numerous amenities like cafes, restaurants, shops, museums, art galleries and music venues that make it a really exciting place to live and study.

As an international student, my experience at Newcastle College University Centre has been enriching and fulfilling. Everyone I’ve met at the University Centre, staff and student, have been welcoming and supportive, providing any resources and assistance I needed to help me adjust to life in the UK and thrive academically.

 

What was the application process for Newcastle College University Centre like, in your experience?

The application process for Newcastle College University Centre was straightforward and well-organised. I submitted my application online and received prompt communications from the Admissions Team and the International Team regarding any required documents and my next steps.

 

How did the International Office help you with your application to study at Newcastle College University Centre, and what support have you received whilst being a student?

The International Team provided me with invaluable assistance throughout the application process, including offering advice and guidance on visa requirements, accommodation options and other essential matters. Even once I enrolled as a student, I continued to receive support from the International Team for any concerns or queries I have, which has been a big help to me during my time here!

 

Tell us about how you have worked with industry whilst studying your degree (i.e. talks, live briefs, projects, etc.).

Studying at Newcastle College University Centre has been a transformative experience for me in many ways, not least the opportunities provided by the close connections between my course and the local digital technologies industry. Alongside being a very practical course which encourages a hands-on approach to learning, I’ve had several opportunities to network with local industry partners, not just through digital technology forums but also internships and live briefs from industry that I’ve worked on as long-term projects during my degree. This has allowed me to apply the theoretical concepts I’ve learnt on my degree to real-world situations, which has given me valuable practical skills, knowledge and experience to use in industry. In addition, the diverse faculty and student body ha exposed me to a range of perspectives and ideas, which has challenged me to think critically and expand my worldview. Overall, my time at Newcastle College University Centre has proved incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for the opportunities it has provided me to grow and develop academically, professionally and personally.

 

How do you think learning from industry-experienced tutors has benefitted you?

Learning from industry-experienced tutors has been incredibly beneficial to me, as they bring real-world expertise and insights into the classroom. Their practical knowledge has enhanced my learning experience and helped me to bridge the gap between theory and practice, which can only benefit me as I move forward in my career.

 

What has been your biggest challenge either before or whilst studying for your degree?

I’d say my biggest challenge during my degree has been balancing my academic responsibilities and the time commitments required from full-time studying with my other commitments, as well as adjusting to a new cultural and academic environment as an international student. That said, I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better at both with support from the International Team and the staff at Newcastle College University Centre – I really can’t thank them enough!

 

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by the opportunity to make a positive impact through technology, creativity and innovation. I’m driven by a passion for learning, growth and making a difference in the world.

 

What has been the highlight of your time studying at Newcastle College University Centre?

The highlight of my time at Newcastle College University Centre has been the sense of community and camaraderie among students and faculty, as well as the opportunity to pursue my academic and personal interests in a supportive and stimulating environment.

 

What have you enjoyed most about living in the UK?

I’ve enjoyed the cultural diversity, vibrant atmosphere and rich history of the UK. I’ve loved the opportunity to explore new cities, engage with different cultures and experience life in a foreign country. Every part of my time in England has been incredibly rewarding!

 

How do you feel that your degree at Newcastle College University Centre has prepared you for the future?

My degree at Newcastle College University Centre has equipped me with the knowledge, skills and confidence to pursue a successful career in computing and to adapt to the rapidly-evolving digital technologies industry. Everything I have learned during my Honours Degree has been designed and taught with industry in mind, so knowing that I can go into industry once I graduate with everything I need to begin building my dream career is very exciting to me.

 

What are your plans after you graduate?

After Graduation, I plan to pursue opportunities in the digital technologies industry, although I haven’t decided yet whether that means seeking employment immediately or progressing onto a Masters Degree so I have as many of the specialist knowledge and qualifications I could need to launch my career and achieve my goals. Either option is appealing, and thanks to the foundation I’ve built from my studies at Newcastle College University Centre, I know I have the capacity to do both!
