Free college meals
As part of our aim to help our students manage the costs associated with studying at college Newcastle College offers eligible full-time students a free meal each day they are in college.
All full-time students aged 16-18, who meet the eligibility criteria, will be entitled to have a free meal of their choice, up to the value of £3.50 per day.
You will be given an allowance for each day that you are in college, this will be calculated using your college timetable.
To qualify for the free college school meal scheme you must meet one of more of the following criteria. The student, or parents of the student need to be in receipt of one or more of the following benefits:
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit) and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190, as assessed by Her Majesty’s -Revenue and Customs
Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
During the initial roll out of the benefit, Universal Credit
Support for equipment costs
Some courses require expensive equipment in order for you to maximise your learning and development. Newcastle College can support you with the cost of your equipment. For example, a hairdressing student will receive financial support to purchase scissors, clippers, combs etc.
The college has good links with travel providers around the north east. If you are not eligible for a free college travel pass you may be entitled to a discounted travel pass. Information and advice will be available when you come to see us for an interview.

All of our buildings are equipped with the latest technology giving you access to the internet at all times, this ensures you can keep up to date via your laptop, smart phone or tablet.
Discounted gym and spa membership
As a Newcastle College student you can; access The Zone, our very own gym and spa centre or unwind at The Retreat, our beauty salon offering you a range of beauty and hair treatments. All memberships are available at a superb discounted rate to ensure all students can relax and unwind after a day at college.
Students’ Union discounts
When you join our Students’ Union you’ll have the option to purchase an NUS student card that will entitle you to a whole range of discounts for major shops, restaurants and tourist attractions. Our Students’ Union also runs a range of clubs giving you the chance to join in with fellow students.
Many of our courses include trips to maximise your learning and development. You may also be given the opportunity to attend conferences and exhibitions to give you an understanding of the subject you are studying.
