Music case study

Cortney Dixon - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music

"I am from South Shields and attended Harton Technology College, while at school a friend told me about Newcastle College so I attended an open evening. At the open evening I had a tour of the Performing Arts building. The facilities drew me away! Throughout my course I loved the venue sessions (playing live music) and being able to play on an actual stage.

From the very first week we were songwriting. We were also put in to bands and being a solo artist this helped my people skills and made me appreciate the dynamics of performing with other people. Newcastle College has helped further my music playing and the tutors are there to help and to push you when you need it.

After my course I am taking a gap year, to find a manager and to write more songs. I have currently been offered a few contracts and I recently supported Sophie Ellis-Bexter in front of 14,000 people. I want to do more of that! I would recommend the College simply because I got to learn more about what I love. If you have a passion for music it’s really important to learn about the business side of music. Studying here made sure I had a rounded knowledge of music."
