HEFC Social Welfare and Psychology

The culmination of my ambition to be a social worker, my life experiences and my daughter getting older and being a little more independent led me to investigate how I could follow my dream and become a social worker.

I did my research before returning to education and I spoke to a friend who is a social worker. She suggested that I do HEFCs as a way to access Higher Education as an adult. I decided to study for one HEFC in Sociology first of all just to see how I would cope with returning to education. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and my success spurred me on to take another 2 HEFCs in Social Welfare and Psychology.

I have found that I am really enjoying the challenge of returning to study. I have worked hard and the focus of a career goal has really helped to keep me motivated.

In 2007 I made an application to study Social Work at University. I put a lot of effort into my application and sought advice and support from tutors and lecturers. I was delighted to be invited to an interview at Northumbria University and even more thrilled when I received a conditional offer of a place on their BA (Hons) in Social Work.

HEFC Quantitative Methods, English Language and Human Biology

I first studied at Newcastle College when I left school – completing a CACHE certificate in Childcare and Education. I started my diploma, but halfway through I left and got a job, and have since worked in admin and bingo hall.

I decided I still wanted to work with children and started work experience though an education employment experience. This proved to be a turning point in my life. I loved the work – especially at a primary school, and started to gain confidence that a future in primary teaching could be possible.

I contacted Newcastle College and they offered me a place on an HEFC Level 2 course. I found that I really loved the course and I was really pleased to achieve a distinction in Quantitative Methods. More than anything, the HEFC 2 course really helped me to believe that I could reach my ultimate goal of becoming a teacher.

In 2007 I enrolled on the HEFC level 3 courses in Quantitative Methods, English Language and Human Biology - which I am thoroughly enjoying. I’ve sent off my UCAS application and am really happy to have been offered a place on the BA (Hons) in Childhood Studies at both Northumbria and Sunderland universities. Currently my intention is to apply to do a P.G.C.E after I graduate which will give me qualified teacher status.

I can hardly believe that I am well on my way to fulfilling my dream.
