Cyber Security case study

Sam Sutcliffe - FdSc Cyber Security

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
I had already studied a music course at the College which I really enjoyed and I wanted a backup plan to my music. I researched what courses the College offered that I would be interested in and which courses would give me good career prospects. After attending an open evening at the College, I had a better understanding of what I wanted to do.

Why did you choose the course?
I wanted to specialise in a type of computing, I didn’t want to be a jack of all trades within the area. After talking to the tutors at the open day I knew cyber security was the route for me as it is full of investigation and problem solving which are two things that appeal to me.

What did you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoyed so much of it. The freedom, finding out about new software and networking. Simply being in a relaxed environment where everyone treats each other with respect. And from start to finish the tutors were brilliant. Their support helped everyone keep on the right path and they worked so hard to get the best of out of each student.

What inspires you?
Success is what inspires me, striving for the next great thing. I have never been one for just doing what the crowd does. I like to be different and stand out which is what this course has done for me.

Do you think your degree has set you up for employment?
Yes, I have been given the opportunity of a work placement at Nissan, working with their cyber security team. After it could lead to employment. To get a chance to work at such a large, well known company such as Nissan is amazing and it wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t received such great training from Newcastle College.
