Healthcare Practice case study

Paula Bourn - FdSc Health Care Practice

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
I did an access course with Newcastle College and this lead to my enrolment on the FdSc Health Care Practice. Someone from the health care team came into my access course and told us all about the different courses available at the College. I was intrigued by how much the College offered. I was told about the open events and thought I would go along and see if I could find out more information. At the open evening everyone I meet was really nice and the staff had all the information about the course. They were able to explain everything to me. I even found out about the 24+ loan that would support me through my studies.

Why did you choose the course?
I knew I wanted to do clinical skills and get real experience and Newcastle College could offer that. When I came for my interview I was blown away by the facilities the College had, I didn’t expect to see them at a College. I did look into other universities courses and I found that Newcastle College offered the same if not better. And the course fees at the College are great value for money.

What has been your highlight of studying at Newcastle College?
The highlight of my course so far has been my clinical assessment. I hate exams as my nerves normally get the best of me. However in my clinical assessment I got a mark of 96%, I was so shocked. This was a massive confidence boost for me and made me realise that I can do this.

How do you think your degree has set you up for employment?
My degree has definitely set me up for employment. Before I started at the College I was working as a receptionist in a sunbed shop. Now I am a nursing assistant and I am really enjoying my career change and new found confidence.

What are your plans after your course?
My plans for the future are to enjoy my job and get as much experience as I can. I have been told by my employer that once I successfully complete my course at the College I can apply for the next tier up. I hope to progress within my career and I am looking forward to seeing what the future brings.
