Childcare case study

Calum Robb - BA (Hons) Children and Young People (Top-Up)

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?

I was living with a friend who was already studying a Foundation Degree at Newcastle College and they recommended the College to me. I looked at the Foundation Degree in Children and Young People which was really appealing to my future ambitions. I also knew that once I’d completed the two years I could progress to a BA (Hons) Top-Up.

Did you have the opportunity to go on a work placement as part of your course?

Whilst on the Foundation Degree we were required to do at least 160 hours of placement, as well as an additional 100 hours placement on the Honours Degree Top-Up. As a result of these placements, along with working part-time in a local secondary school my confidence has gone through the roof. I now teach GCSE and A Levels on my own and I’ve been able to take on more responsibility at work which has resulted in a pay increase.

What are the staff at the college like?

The staff here are excellent! They’re so supportive and they are even there to help out with things that are not directly related to the degree. They can help with information on student finance and have been there to talk through my career options after I finish.

What has been the highlight for you?

I think it was probably watching the kids I’ve taught get their results. It was a stressful wait but definitely rewarding. It also feels really nice to know that some of the pupils have chosen my course, which I’m responsible for.
