Fashion case study

Kay Bowey - FdA Fashion and BA (Hons) Creative Practice

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?

I chose to study at Newcastle College because the course offered me exciting work placement opportunities. I was also aware of the excellent facilities on campus which also played a big part when choosing where I was going to study.

Have you had the opportunity to go on work placement?

During my course I’ve taken part in two work placements, the first involved working in a classroom environment which has been great preparation for beyond my creative practice journey.

I also enjoyed a placement with internationally renowned fashion designer Wayne Hemmingway, who owns Red or Dead. This involved designing and manufacturing a six-piece clothing collection. My work has been displayed in the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle and I have also had my own exhibition there. I have worked on a live project for Wayne Hemmingway which gave me the chance to gain industry experience and reflect upon my course.

What does your course involve?

My course has involved both theory and practical work. On the practical side I was able to fine-tune my fashion designing using all the sewing machines and Overlockers based at the college.

The facilities at the college are great, especially the sewing rooms, the technicians are excellent and their industry knowledge is really beneficial to students.

What are your plans after you graduate?

I'm currently completing my BA (Hons) Creative Practice Top-Up Degree and once I graduate I have a few placements lined up, including teaching fashion in schools around the north east. I am also designing a bag collection that will then be manufactured and hopefully sold in Harrods. The work experience I’ve gained as part of my degree has really improved my employment prospects which is extremely beneficial once I begin looking for employment.
