Performing Arts case study

Carly-Jo Naylor - FdA Dance

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
I choose to study at Newcastle College for my degree as the course offers exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to learn dance techniques and train as much as possible and this is a big part of the course. You are given so many dance technique workshops and master classes which I couldn’t find at any other university.

What are the facilities like at the College?
For a college it is so big, there is so much to do and you get to study in the Performance Academy which is a dedicated building for performance and production arts. There are 6 main dance studios that you are able to book out and use to practice.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
If I had to pick one thing I have enjoyed the most about my course it would be performing. You are given so many opportunities to perform on the course, learn new techniques, practice what you already know and rehearse for performances and competitions. As well as receive the theory needed to be successful on the degree.

Have you had the opportunity to go on a work placement as part of your degree?
I will shortly be starting a placement with State of Grace Company a North East theatre based company, which I am very excited to participate and undertake giving opportunities. The opportunity came about through a previous College performance where the company director was complimentary of my ability and then asked me if I would consider his company and what he had to offer.

Have you worked on any projects/live briefs as part of your course?
We have been given so many opportunities to showcase at many events including; Move It 16, Can You Dance and other internal performances throughout the academic year. Collaborations with companies such as Southpaw Company which involved working alongside community and professional casts to create a mass movement project as a celebration on the opening of a new building 'The Word' in South Shields.

Has there been any guest lectures from industry? If so, have they been useful?
We have a lot of workshops and master classes throughout the course delivered by industry professionals including Tom Shilcock and also regional professionals such as Celeste Hay and Alyss North.

How would you describe the staff at the College and the knowledge of the industry that they have?
The College staff are unbelievable and they know so much. You have a personal tutor who can support you with not only the skills and knowledge needed for the industry but they also support you with the emotional and personal side of dance. As it is so physical they make sure you are well looked after and that you are looking after yourself and your body.

How do you think your degree has prepared you for employment?
I think my degree has prepared me really well for employment, I have the skills, techniques and knowledge needed for the industry but Newcastle College has also given me the experience to compliment it.

What are your plans after your course?
After the course I would like to continue my studies and go on to do a Top Up degree.
