Sport Case Study

Ben Stanners - FdSc Applied Health and Exercise Science

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
I had studied my Level 3 at the College and had such a great experience that it made sense for me to stay to study my Foundation Degree. I liked the course tutors too which helped make my decision.

Why did you choose the course?
I’ve always had a keen interest in sport so it was a natural progression for me to study it at a higher level. When I looked at the course content I knew I’d enjoy it.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
All of it! I really enjoy the practical aspects of the course but I also like the business side of the course where you get to do modules in marketing and put a business plan together. I’d like to open a gym in the future so becoming more knowledgeable in this area is really useful.

Have you had the opportunity to go on a work placement as part of your degree?
Not yet but I will next year and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm hoping it'll be in a gym setting.

How do you think your degree has set up for employment?
It’s helped me to become more knowledgeable in the field of health and exercise science and develop key skills such teamwork and communications skills. I feel more confident going into a working environment now.

How would you describe the staff at the College?
They’re really nice, they’re approachable and you can go to them if you need anything and they’ll always try to help you.

What’s Newcastle like as a student city?
It’s really good; it’s got everything you need as a student. I live at home at the moment but I’m moving into a shared flat next year with friends which I’m looking forward to as it means I’ll get to make the most of student life.

What are your plans after your course?
I’d like to work as a personal trainer in a gym to start with then hopefully set up my own business.
