Who the course is for

This course is ideal for 16 to 18 year olds wishing to pursue a potential career in aircraft maintenance.

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the first year of the course you will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering.
 

If you successfully complete both years of the course of will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

Course Content

Your studies will be formed into units that fall into the following subject areas:

  • Applications of Mechanical Systems in Engineering

  • Aircraft Maintenance Practices
  • Aviation Case Studies & Study Skills

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through in class tests, written assignments and controlled assessments. Your performance during practical tasks and activities will also be assessed.

Progression Opportunities

If you meet the following criteria during the 1st year of study you will be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering:

  • Achievement- Overall Merit grade
  • Attendance- Over 85% for whole course
  • Attitude- Positive & committed to learning

If you successfully complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering with the required number of UCAS points you could progress onto:

  • Newcastle College Foundation Degree in Aeronautical Engineering (2 years at Newcastle Aviation Academy)
  • Kingston University Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Engineering (A 3 year partnered Degree at Newcastle Aviation Academy)
     

Career Opportunities

Aeronautical, or aerospace, engineers design and develop products such as airliners, helicopters, fighter jets, satellites and space vehicles engineers. They also work on components that make up aircraft such as landing gear, engines and electrical/electronic systems also require highly specialised skills.

Aircraft maintenance is another exciting alternative – aircraft engineers can travel the world maintaining, inspecting and servicing aircraft to high international safety standards. Specialising in either mechanics (engines, airframes) or avionics (instrumentation, electrical/electronic equipment) , aircraft engineers work for airlines, maintenance divisions of aerospace manufacturers or specialist aircraft maintenance companies.
 

Entry Requirements

• 5 GCSEs (grades A*-C or Grade 4-9) or equivalent at pass level including Mathematics, English and a Science (Dual Award/Physics/Chemistry)
• Pass the Aviation Academy entrance assessment (based on maths, physics and logic)
• Satisfactory completion of the school induction programme
• If English is not your first language, you will also need an IELTS score of 5.5 or above.

Course Costs

You will require suitable safety boots and overalls for the practical and on aircraft instructional sessions. You will need to provide these.

You will also require stationery such as A4 folders, paper, pens, pencils, rulers and a scientific calculator.

There are several enrichment activities associated with this programme. To cover these costs, you will be required to pay £50. This will be discussed during induction week.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.

Depending on your age and type of course you choose you may be liable for fees, even if you are under 19.
