Learn how to communicate effectively with D/deaf people. This course is ideal for those looking to develop their knowledge and capability in British Sign Language.

Who the course is for

For people who wish to improve on the skills they already have and communicate at an intermediary level with D/deaf people on a personal or work related basis.

Course Content

The course units cover:
- Travel and holidays.
- Shopping and spending.
- Food and drink.
- Conversation skills.
- BSL grammar structure.
- Spatial placing.
 

Learning Methods

Through practical activities you'll learn how to have a general conversation with a D/deaf person. Roleplay will be used in most sessions. You will watch videos of D/deaf people telling stories to improve your receptive skills. 100 Guided Learning Hours.

Assessment Methods

There are 3 modules for this course and an assessment will take place at the end of each module. This will be carried out by the course tutor and invigilated by the awarding body.

- Level 3 Certificate in Facilitating Communication with Deaf People (Note-taking Skills)
- Level 3 Certificate for Language Service Professionals Working with Deaf and Deaf-blind People (Lip-speaking)

- Communication Support Worker
 

Entry Requirements

You will have the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. You will be required to be interviewed by the Deaf tutor and the course Co-ordinator as to your suitability to complete the level 2 qualification. You must be committed to 90% attendance and be able to mix within the Deaf community on a regular basis- you will be asked to provide evidence of this.
You should have good communication skills and be able to work with others.

For international students an IELTS score of at least 4.5 is required.
