Overview

This Entry in Public Services course develops the skills learnt during the Level 2 Diploma and has been designed to be a hands-on vocational programme.

Designed in partnership with the Fifth Fusiliers, the military academy is the perfect choice for learners that aspire to join the military or wish to undertake a course that is both physically and mentally demanding.

 
Course enrichment

• As a student, you will have the opportunity take part in a 12 day training course with the Fire Service College and become a retained firefighter (18+ only).
• You can also apply to become a reservist for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (receiving specialist training from Army Personnel)

Who the course is for

This Entry in Public Services course is for those who are aged 16 - 18 by 31st August 2018 who are actively pursuing a career in the Uniformed Public Services or are progressing from a level 2 programme with a merit or distinction grade.

This course is designed to develop learner’s awareness of the Public Sector and the Skills, Qualities and Attributes required. It is ideally suited for those learners wishing to pursue a hands-on vocational route into the public sector.

Learners that aspire to join the police or another route within the criminal justice system should consider the Level 3 Policing and Criminal Justice Academy.

Qualification Gained

NCFE Level 3 Certificate for Entry to the Uniformed Services.

Course Content

Entry in Public Services investigates a number of important areas of study including:

  • Prepare for a career in a chosen uniformed service
  • Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion

Learning Methods

Tutors will teach you in a variety of ways to meet your individual learning needs. This will include:

  • Classroom Based Sessions
  • Tutorials
  • Practical Sessions
  • Enrichment Activities
  • Off Campus Trips
  • Work Related Experience (if applicable)

Assessment Methods

There will be a variety of assessment methods including physical fitness testing, psychometric tests, individual and group presentations, group discussions, portfolio building and simulated role play.

Progression Opportunities

Personal tutors will guide you throughout your studies to ensure you can move onto the correct form of study or employment.

Students successfully completing this course may be able to apply for an additional level 3 Uniformed Service Qualification that will give them the UCAS points required to study a variety of Higher Education Programmes.

Please note, the NCFE Level 3 Certificate for Entry to the Uniformed Services carries the following UCAS points:

- Distinction*: 56
- Distinction: 48
- Merit: 32
- Pass: 16

Should learners progress onto the NCFE Level 3 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services, the qualification carries the following UCAS points:

- Distinction*: 112
- Distinction: 96
- Merit: 64
- Pass: 32

Career Opportunities

On completion of the course learners will be able to apply to join a range of roles within the armed forces and will provide a stepping stone on a longer term goal of joining the Police, Fire Service or Prison Service

Earn While you Learn with Uniformed Public Services. The UPS section at Newcastle College has a formal partnership with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, should learners become a reservist they will be able to undertake training with those military services in college time and receive payment.

Please note to join the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers you must be 18 and pass their entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE’s Grades A – C including Maths and/or English.

A good attitude towards self-development including fitness, working outdoors and meeting deadlines.

A good level of organisational skills is required, together with a strong desire to undertake independent research.

Course Costs

Learners will be required to pay £200 in instalments to cover a range of activities including outward bound and a residential programme and cover the cost of a uniform.  These costs are non refundable as trips are an integral part of the programme of study.

Further costs may be incurred if learners choose to take part in First Aid at Work and/or an International Expedition.

Those in receipt of 16 - 18 financial support* may be eligible for help with this.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.

Depending on your age and type of course you choose you may be liable for fees, even if you are under 19.
