If you are interested in embarking on a dynamic career within the expanding events industry then this course is for you. The programme has been designed in consultation with industry professionals to introduce and develop the skills and knowledge required by those wishing to pursue a career in events or venue management.

 

The programme offers students an overview of the events industry and a solid academic grounding, as well as practical, hands-on modules enabling you to grow and develop as a practitioner. It features strong ‘work based learning’ providing you with an opportunity to build and develop your CV as you study. Previous students have completed placements within a range of varied organisations, including Beamish Museum, Topshop/Topman and North East Business Expo.

Course Content

 Year 1

  • Personal Development - This module will give you the opportunity to utilise a variety of online exercises and tasks to aid personal development.
  • Contextual Studies 1 – This module develops academic writing and provides a context for tracing the development of your industry.
  • Events Planning 1 – An introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of event planning.
  • Marketing for Events – An introduction to the concepts and functions of marketing with a focus on events.
  • Academic Study Skills - This module will equip you with the necessary supporting knowledge, study and personal skills for you to be able to successfully complete level 4 of your Foundation Degree.


Year 2

  • Funding & Sponsorship – This module explores event funding streams, with emphasis on funding grants and sponsorship activities.
  • Work Related Learning - This module supports you in identifying, addressing and experiencing the demands of your vocational area through a range of work placements.
  • Events Planning 2 - This module builds on Event Planning as you gain first-hand experience of creating an industry–standard event concept and managing it through to final execution at an external location.
  • Contextual Studies 2 - This module will explore the various political, social, economic and technological ‘drivers for change’ that affect Events Management.
  • Alternative Techniques – This module aims to enhance your breadth of knowledge and understanding relating to technical production that are not covered in other areas of the course.
  • Practice Enrichment - This module is intended to introduce and develop related vocational skills and techniques that support your interdisciplinary development.

Year 3

  • Professional Development - Within this module you will be given the opportunity to utilise a variety of online exercises and tasks to introduce a personal development programme to prepare you for progression and/or employment.
  • Work Based Learning - This module is core to your Foundation Degree, offering the opportunity for you to contextualise the knowledge and skills delivered in other modules to specific work based projects and placements.
  • Business Planning – This encompasses entrepreneurship, business planning and HR and aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to produce an effective business plan with potential for use in industry.
    • Strategic Marketing - This module is a natural progression from the Introduction to Marketing and examines theory and techniques used from a strategic management point of view.

Assessment Methods

 You will be assessed through written and practical assignments and projects.

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Events Management will provide you with a solid foundation on which to progress onto a top up year of your choice such as one of our suite of BA Hons (Creative Enterprise) programmes or a related subject area such as Marketing or Business Management.

 

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Events Management will give you the skills and techniques required to gain employment within the Events industry and the wider creative sector.

Entry Requirements

 

A minimum of 48 UCAS Tariff Points at A-level, BTEC QCF Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Pass in Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design) .
Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.
Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or the nationally recognised equivalent.

Course Costs

You will normally have to pay for course items such as stationery, books and equipment and a laptop computer and smartphone could be very beneficial to students on this course.

Please note that some placements or visits may have costs attached and students may be expected to work ‘unsociable hours’.
