Overview

The Level 1 Diploma is designed to prepare young people for entry into the construction industry in their chosen craft. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions.

This is a full time course developed for school leavers who want to build a career within the crafts of the construction/bricklaying industry.

Course Content

General core units

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

Occupation specific units

  • Contribute to setting out and building of masonry structures up to damp proof course
  • Carrying out blocklaying activities
  • Carrying out bricklaying activities
  • Carrying out cavity walling activities

Synoptic practical assignment

Multiple choice unit end tests

You will also be required to complete Functional Skills Level one in Maths and English, or GCSE unless you have already gained the relevant qualifications.

You will learn through: - Lectures - Group Work - Demonstrations - Discussions - Hands-on practical training and assessment

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on the learner showing their ability as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification. Knowledge course work and testing with specialist practical Synoptic Assignments.

Progression Opportunities

On completion of the Level 1 course you will be given opportunity to progress to the Intermediate Diploma Level 2, which is a full time course. Alternatively if you gain employment you may wish to return through the apprenticeship route.

Career Opportunities

This Diploma Level 1 qualification will prepare you to either progress to the Intermediate Diploma Level 2 full time course or into a working apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.

If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 5.0 or above.

Course Costs

Students will be required to purchase personal protective equipment to enable them to access the course.

Safety boots, high visibility vest, safety gloves and safety glasses.

Also general stationery such as pen, pencil, paper, rule, calculator and file.

A personal tool kit would benefit learners practical training and competency

 

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.

Depending on your age and type of course you choose you may be liable for fees, even if you are under 19.
