Overview

Want a career in Building Services Engineering but not sure about which area to go into? This one year introductory qualification gives learners a flavour of the skills involved in four different areas of building services engineering; plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating and refrigeration and air conditioning.

You'll find out what you enjoy, and then you can move onto a specialist qualification in either plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating or refrigeration and air-conditioning and hopefully eventually move onto a career.

Who the course is for

Level 2 is ideal if you already have a good basic understanding of the building services industry, and want to progress in your career. You may be a young learner or an adult.

 

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the course you will gain a City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma Certificate in Access to Building Services.

Course Content

Teaching will occur over three and a half days a week. With an additional half day a week reserved for students who have to study GCSE's or Functional Skills.

 

You'll need to complete four mandatory units:
 

• Understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
• Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering
• Understand the roles, responsibilities and procedures within building services engineering
• Understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical services engineering

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through a combination of written portfolio and direct observation of practical assessments.
 

Progression Opportunities

On completion of the Level 2 you will have demonstrated levels of understanding and practical ability and if you show the correct aptitude you may be in a position to enter a plumbing apprenticeship.

However this is dependent on securing a suitable employer.

 

Career Opportunities

This Level 2 will provide you with the basic understanding and skills needed in the building services installation industry.
 

Entry Requirements

It is strongly desirable for candidates to hold a GCSE grade C or above in Mathematics and English Language.

For all successful applicants who do not possess the above it is mandatory for them to attend and pass either their Functional Skills or GCSE in Mathematics and / or English Language whilst studying this vocational course.

However most candidates that join this course will progress from the PEO Level 2 Plumbing Installation course.

If English is not your first language you will need to achieve an IELTS score of 5.0 or above.

There will also be a formal interview.

Course Costs

All students must provide and wear their own 'Personal Protective Equipment' when in our workshops. This is to include, hard hat, steel toe capped boots and high visibility vest.

 

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.
