This course is delivered by staff who are highly experienced within the world of retail and Business and is suitable for those students who want to gain practical skills and experience to work in a business or retail environment.

The course aims to allow learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life across a range of retailers.

The course will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to enter into the world of work and equip you for the challenges ahead. In addition to this you will gain new skills in English and Mathematics.

Upon completion of the units you will receive a full Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge awarded by Pearson (EDEXCEL) who is a nationally recognised awarding body.

Who the course is for

Applicants for this course will be dynamic, innovative individuals with a passion for retail which drives them forward to fulfil their aspirations.

It is suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years who has the motivation and vision to work within retail, either as a shop assistant, marketing assistant, buyer or merchandising administrator.

Qualification Gained

On successful completion of this course you will gain the following qualification:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge.
  • English and/or Mathematics functional skills or GCSE

Course Content

People who work in the Retail and Business sector need a range of practical and academic skills. We will assist you to develop these skills and knowledge so that you can progress to the career of your choice in the future.

You will learn about:

  • Working in a shop
  • Visual Merchandising
  • Stock control
  • Marketing and promoting the shop
  • Customer service
  • Health and safety within a shop.
  • English and Mathematics skills

You will develop skills in:

  • Customer service
  • Finances
  • Marketing
  • Stock control
  • How to work with others.

You will practice these skills through a variety of "hands on" tasks such as running a Christmas market, marketing an promotional event and setting up a mobile shop. You will also have the opportunity to develop skills within the community through fund raising events and volunteering opportunities.

You will also undertake an English or Maths qualification.

Learning Methods

The information will be delivered through a combination of formal taught sessions and simulated activities. You will be expected to participate in group work and individual tasks.

There will be a significant amount of work experience within the College environment where you be expected to use the theoretical knowledge gained to put it into practice in a real working environment.

Assessment Methods

There are no examinations. You will be assessed through outside of the classroom activities, observations and project work and written tasks completed within the class

Progression Opportunities

You can progress onto a level 3 qualification or into employment within the retail or administrative sector.

Entry Requirements

You do not need formal qualifications but enrolment is subject to a successful interview with the Programme Leader.

Candidates should have good communication skills in order to complete assignments and participate in class discussion.

If English is not your first language you will also need an IELTS score of 5.0 or above.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1.
