Overview

This Programme of Study covers the technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry.

It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

The Functional skills involved are those core elements of English, Mathematics that provide an individual with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and at work in the Automotive Industry

This Programme of Study has been designed to prepare the Candidate for Employment within the Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Industry.

On successful completion of their Programme of Study candidates will have achieved the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Functional Skills Maths
  • Functional Skills English.

Course Content

This is a Programme of Study which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

  • Light vehicle safety inspection.
  • Diagnostic principles of Light Vehicle Engines, Tyres, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Diagnostic Principles and Maintenance of Light Vehicle Transmission Systems and Electrical and Electronic Systems.

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Learning Methods

The candidates will learn by both theoretical underpinning sessions that are classroom based and by undertaking a set of practical tasks that will be assessed in our well-equipped workshops.

Assessment Methods

The student’s knowledge is assessed by practical assessments in an automotive workshop environment and by ‘on-line’ multiple-choice testing.

Candidates will be expected to have completed a level 2 programme.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.
