ECDL Essentials is part 1 of the standard qualification recognised throughout Europe, for competence in computing. You'll learn theory and practice relating to many aspects of Computing and Information Technology.You will be using MS Office 2010 software while you are progressing through the course.

Who the course is for

This course is for anyone with some experience of using a computer who would like to extend their practical skills and gain a qualification.

You are required to undertake a minimum of 4 hours independent learning at home per week on a pc or a laptop.

This course is Web based - you will not need to have MS Office 2010 installed on your pc or laptop to access your course resources but you will require a broadband internet connection.

Course Content

The course consist of 3 units:

  • Security for IT Users
  • IT User Fundamentals
  • Using Email and the Internet

IT user fundamentals

IT user fundamentals build the learner’s confidence by teaching basic interaction with computers, from start-up, to productive use and basic computer housekeeping.
 

Using email and the internet

This unit helps the learner understand how to use internet and email in a safe and secure way. It explains key terms and builds knowledge of the fundamentals of computer security and use of the internet and email.


Security for IT users

The security for IT users unit provides the learner with an essential understanding of how to use a computer in a safe and secure manner, protecting their own data as well as that of other users
 

Learning Methods

You will learn in our well-equipped computer workshops at an individual basis with the support of a tutor when required.

You will work through each course module completing assessments as you progress followed by a diagnostic assessment which will indicate if you are ready to sit the related live module test - all of the course, assessment and test resources are online.

Progression Opportunities

You could choose to progress to our BCS Level 2 Certificate ECDL Extra (Part 2 ITQ) which will allow you to gain the full ECDL qualification.

Career Opportunities

You will be equipped to apply for any job using Microsoft IT Office (2010) Applications.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must attend an induction at the Trade Union Education Centre at 14 Blandford Square prior to enrolment to ensure this course is suitable to meet your learning needs.

If English is not your first language you will also need an IELTS score of 6 or above.

You are required to undertake a minimum of 4 hours independent learning at home per week on a pc or a laptop with a broadband internet connection.
