Overview

The Foundation Degree (FdEng) in Renewable Energy Technology provides an excellent balance of academic and Industrial knowledge. FdEng courses at Newcastle College are designed to kick-start your engineering journey by enhancing and developing new skills, providing strong Foundations in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Industrial and system engineering skills, also developing softer transferable skills throughout the qualification which enables successful graduates to look, apply and get jobs within Engineering.
The first Year (Level 4) of the foundation degree will give you multi-disciplinary theoretical, simulation and practical experience focusing on Engineering Mathematics, Drawing Systems, Electrical Science, Mechanical Science, Introduction to Renewables, and Machine tools and fabrication.
Second year (Level 5) of the foundation degree will build upon previous knowledge and experience and Project management, Further renewables, Mechanical power transmission, Electrical power transmission, Control systems and Wind turbine design.
Renewable energy technology has become the focus of governments around the world as it is seen as a solution to addressing the ever growing need for low carbon energy production. On completion of the course graduates will have the skills and knowledge to be able to; design, plan and implement renewable energy solutions, analyse current and future energy demand, analyse economical, environmental and social aspects that effect the installation of renewable energy projects, and analyse current industry regulations and standards. Graduates will be able to apply for technician or engineer positions in both commercial and public sector organisations. Opportunities for employment exist in a wide range of industries, such as bio-energy, wind power, solar energy, wave energy, tidal energy or in the off-shore energy industry.
The National Students Survey (NSS) undertaken independently by Ipsos MORI gathers information from undergraduate students asking individual student to provide feedback on their course and institution. Newcastle College for academic year 2015-16, achieved a 97% student satisfaction rating for Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering Foundation Degree. Also, 100% students studying Foundation degree in Mechanical Manufacturing foundation degree last year have undertaken job offers or progressed with further Education qualification.
The course combined with a Top-up Bachelor’s level degree satisfies the academic accreditation for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with The Institute of Mechanical Engineers. As part of this course you will be encourage to apply for Student Membership of the IMechE which offers a range of benefits to students at no extra cost.

Work Guarantee

Who the course is for

This course is designed to prepare you for employment as an engineer specialising in renewable energy technology. In order to meet the needs of industry, the course contains sector skills core modules and specialist modules which focus on the principles and practical applications of expanding renewable energy technology. The course covers elements such as the development and integration of wind, marine, biomass and solar technologies. You will also develop additional practical, presentation, debating, writing and thinking skills.

Upon completion of the programme you will gain a Foundation Degree in Renewable Energy Technology.

Progression Opportunities

Upon completion of the FdEng Program you can progress to our BSc (Hons) Top-up in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, or BSc (Hons) Engineering Management, as well as programs at other institutions.

Career Opportunities

Many career opportunities exist for those who successfully completing the FdEng program including technician or engineer positions in the following renewable energy sectors; bio-energy, wind power, solar energy, wave energy, tidal energy or in the off-shore energy industry.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff Points at A-level, BTEC QCF Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Merits in Level 3 Access to HE Diploma, Advanced Apprenticeship.*
*Must be in Engineering, Maths and/or Science subjects.
Applicants must have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.
Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or the nationally recognised equivalent.
