Overview

This broad-based Level 3 Travel and Tourism course will give you an in-depth understanding of travel and tourism that will be ideal if you wish to progress to a career in the exciting and diverse travel and tourism industry.

You will learn about worldwide destinations, customer service, the travel and tourism industry, visitor attractions and transport needed for tourism. Experience of work is an integral part of the course and you will be given the opportunity to have the role of an ambassador working at key events in the city for NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI).

Choose a Level 3 Travel and Tourism course if you're interested in gaining valuable work experience within the industry or are looking to progress onto a travel or hospitality degree.

• Travel and tourism students have enjoyed trips to Spain and France to help understand culture and travel.
• Students are given the opportunity to support regional events by acting as NewcastleGateshead Initiative city ambassadors.
• Last year, students took part in site visits and master classes with companies like British Airways, Newcastle International Airport, Virgin Atlantic and Marriott Hotels.

The Travel and Tourism Level 3 course is suitable for school leavers who have completed their GCSE's and who are interested in working in the Travel and Tourism industries or progressing to a Foundation Degree following a further year of study.

Course Content

You will learn about a wide range of career opportunities throughout the course, by working on a series of projects. In your first year you will be developing an understanding of the Travel Industry as a whole with a focus on the importance of customer service. You will be expected to work in our Rosette Standard Restaurant to develop these key skills. The subjects will include:

  • Tourism in the UK
  • Planning and Delivering Guided Tours
  • Worldwide Destinations
  • Promotions and Sales in Travel and Tourism

Additional Skills Development

As part of your Programme of Study as well as your main qualification you will also develop your work skills. You will do this by attending and participating in:

  • A variety of interesting and relevant visits
  • Master Classes from guest speakers
  • Gaining specialist skills related to employment
  • Learning study skills
  • Personal presentation skills
  • Interview skills
  • Ambassador placement

Maths and English

Newcastle College is committed to developing vital literacy and numeracy skills. Please note that if you do not have a GCSE Grade C or higher in Maths, you will be supported to re-sit or work towards resitting this qualification whilst at college.

Learning Methods

Learning emphasises the vocational aspect of the course. 

There will be lectures, seminars, presentations, group work and role plays.  There will also be compulsory educational visits.

Assessment Methods

There are various assessment methods for each project, ranging from written assignments and reports, individual presentations, online exams and practical activities.

Progression Opportunities

If you successfully complete Year 1 of the programme then you will have the opportunity to progress to the City and Guilds Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism, where you will spend one year studying units such as:

  • Developing an Entertainment Programme in Travel and Tourism
  • Overseas Resort Representatives and Operations
  • Conferences and Events
  • Work Placement in Travel and Tourism

On successful completion of the Extended Diploma, you can apply for Higher Education.

Other options include progressing to Level 3 Aviation Operations or Level 2 Cabin Crew.

Progression is subject to satisfactory attendance, punctuality and meeting your assignment deadlines on a regular basis. This is also subject to a progression interview.

Career Opportunities

There are a vast array of career opportunities that you could consider, these include:

Travel Agent, Tour Operations or holiday/airline call centre, tourist Information Centre, Visitor attractions and cruise lines. For over 18's - Overseas Representative, Cabin Crew and airport check in.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs at a Grade C or above including English Language or English Literature
  • Level 2 First Diploma in Travel and Tourism with Merit/Distinction grade profile plus GCSE passes to C or above in English or Key Skill Level 2 in Communication
  • GNVQ Intermediate Award in any subject at a Merit grade or above plus GCSE Grade C or above in English Language or Key Skill Level 2 in Communication
  • If English is not your first language we would expect an IELTS score of at leasst 5.5 in all areas of assessment
  • No holidays booked during college term time

Course Costs

There are several educational visits and enrichment opportunities including an overseas trip.  

In Year 1 the cost for these enrichment activities is £360.00 which is payable during the first week of induction. Please note that if you choose to progress onto the Extended Diploma you would be expected to pay a deposit of £100.00 by the end of Year 1 and the balance of £350.00 on day 1 of induction of Year 2.

Please note that you are required to wear a uniform on this course, purchased from our on line supplier at a cost of £103.28.

You will also be required to purchase a college scarf/tie. You will normally have to pay for course items such as stationery, books and equipment.

Additional Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18. A learner will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the duration of their qualification, this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.
