What did you do before you came to Newcastle College?
I have been involved with ceramics full time since 1985. Most recently I have been a part-time lecturer at Cumbria Institute of the Arts, visiting lecturer at Camberwell College of Art and Design and Christchurch College Canterbury. I am also a practicing Ceramic Artist and exhibit widely
What's the best thing about working for Newcastle College?
I am something of a 'new boy' as I have only been working here since February, but I have been made to feel very welcome, it is a friendly college.
How does your previous experience help you teach the students on your course?
I have been involved many aspects of ceramics. In education I have studied from National Diploma Level through to Masters Degree Level at the Royal College of Art. Professionally I have run a successful business producing Garden Ceramics and wrote a book on the subject entitled 'Gardenware'. More recently I have focused more on making individual pieces and have exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. I have also taught widely at all levels from secondary up to Masters Level. I believe this experience gives me a broad knowledge of the subject from which to draw upon.
Tell me an interesting fact about yourself
I was an invited artist at the Aberystwyth International Ceramics Festival where I demonstrated on stage in front of around 1000 people. Part of the demonstration was a performance piece where I threw a pot on someone's head!
What would you say to a student thinking of applying to Newcastle College?
Do it! It is a unique course. It is the only course in the country that will give you the opportunity to explore a full range of making and firing techniques. It offers work placements, live projects and business and marketing sessions. It is fantastic preparation for a professional career in the Arts.
What's been the highlight of your career so far?
In December 1998, I was the joint coordinator of an aid project to set up a working pottery in Rubik, Albania. The pottery is still running and employing local people.
