The BSc is a specialist one-year course developed by Newcastle College and accredited by the Society of Sports Therapist and Leeds Metropolitan University which enables students to meet the full requirements of the Society of Sports Therapists. This Society of Sports Therapist accredited programme will, through one final completion year, provide an honours degree and eligibility for membership of the Society of Sports Therapists. It is anticipated that the government through the Health Professional Council will soon require all Sports Therapists to hold a degree and the one year BSc completion awards have been specially designed to meet these requirements. With the build up to the 2012 London Olympics, and concern over the health of the nation, Sport is playing an increasingly important role in society and in people’s leisure times. There is increasing demand for the skills provided by this new qualification. This new degree programme is a redevelopment of our previous Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy to take account of the professional requirements of the Society of Sports Therapists and to respond to developments in the registration of practitioners. The BSc will equip students with the skills and expertise in such areas as exercise prescription, sports massage, and electrotherapy and in skills in the rehabilitation of the injured athlete or sports participant. NB: there is a requirement in Yr3 of the programme for students to work in an appropriate capacity as a Sports Therapist & to work in a professional capacity. Although the college will assist the student with finding appropriate placement opportunities at all stages of the course, the responsibility for this lies with each student. Vocational expertise in Gym Instruction and Exercise training must be demonstrated. This is usually achieved by the student possessing an appropriate level 3 vocational qualification (eg CYQ Gym Instructor).
