Theresa Robson - Motor Vehicle apprentice
Name: Theresa Robson
Age: 20
Apprenticeship: Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
Employer: The Garage, Thropton
What made you decide that an Apprenticeship was the right option for you?
I’m not the type who can sit in a classroom for five days every week, I’m a practical person. I had finished Sixth Form and wanted to get on with getting into work.
How did you find an employer?
It was initially quite difficult but I went around loads of garages asking if they needed anyone. I know a mechanic who works here at the Garage, he said it was a good place to work so I called up and followed the call with my CV.
What day-to-day jobs do you perform?
I help out with MOT’s and services, there’s a great variety, every day is different and you never know what’s going to come through the door. I’m always learning.
What are your career ambitions?
I love it here, but I’d also love to work in a big-name garage, preferably abroad. I want to see what’s out there, see what the world has to offer.
What would you say to individuals that were considering Apprenticeships as a way to develop their career?
It’s the best way forward! I’d totally recommend it. In the motor trade employers are usually looking for at least two years of experience, they want to see that you’ve done something. I’m getting my experience here with my Apprenticeship and I’m getting paid to do it!
What advice would you give to people that are looking to find an employer to put them through an Apprenticeship?
It’s not easy but it’s totally worth it. I looked at loads of places before I found someone. I’d recommend asking people you know and developing contacts in the trade you want to work in.
