Photography case study

Michelle Mercer - FdA Photography

"Previously I worked within IT as an IT Systems & Network Manager but due to corporate restructuring, I was made redundant. As IT technology moves at such a fast pace, I found it difficult to get back into industry so I took the opportunity to take a break from my career and focus on my family commitments.

I had always been interested in photography and knew that I wanted to pursue it as a career so I decided to study a foundation degree in photography. I researched my options online and found that Newcastle College not only offered the course but also offered the course on a part-time basis.

I’m really enjoying my time on the course and I’ve learned so much. There is a strong emphasis on working externally and this can be a challenge when you have family and work commitments. However, I know I’m investing in my future so I’m willing to do what it takes to succeed.

Studying the FdA Photography has been fantastic. In 2013, I launched my freelance photography business; Michelle Mercer Photography. I’ve been able to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve learned on the course to my own business and I’m doing well. I’m excited to see what the future brings."
