Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools case study

Angela Walsh - Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

"Initially, I began a career in administration working for construction companies around the North East. I decided to start a family, so I chose to put my career on hold to focus on my children. Faced with fewer prospects when returning to work at 51, I decided to take another route and was fortunate enough to gain a placement at Bailey Green School in Killingworth.

I love my job at Bailey Green and I knew then that teaching was for me. To strengthen my career prospects and earning potential, I decided that having a teaching assistant qualification would be the best way to develop my career. I discovered that Newcastle College offered the Level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. As it’s the only college in North Tyneside that offered this course, I didn’t hesitate in applying.

When I joined the course, I was cautious as I hadn’t studied in a long time and I didn’t know what to expect. However, I was immediately put at ease by the fantastic course tutors as they helped me to settle in and gave me the confidence to succeed. It also helped that I joined a great group of students. We help each other through the course and I have made great friends as a result.

Studying at Newcastle College was the best decision I made. The tutors appreciate that I have commitments outside of my course and they do everything they can to deliver a course that fits easily within our lives. I’m confident that I’ll develop the skills necessary to forge the career I’ve always wanted."
