Safety and Security

With such a big campus community, it's important that we can easily identify who should and shouldn't be on our campus. All students and colleagues are asked to wear college-issued photographic ID lanyards at all times. ID checks are carried out in buildings, entrances and across campus regularly throughout the day.

Our vigilant, highly-trained and qualified Security Team operate 24/7, 365 days a year. They're easily identifiable in their high-vis vests, which also have body cameras for additional security. If you can't spot a Security Team member and you need assistance, you can call 0191 200 4187.

We have extensive CCTV around campus for the purpose of crime prevention and public safety. Our CCTV is always monitored, with a dedicated emergency line so that we can always contact the Security Team or emergency services if required.

Our Learner Services and Safeguarding Team help us in our commitment to protect young people and adults from all forms of bullying, abuse and radicalisation. Any concerns about welfare should be directed to our Safeguarding Team on NCLSafeguarding@ncl-coll.ac.uk or via 0191 226 6316 during office hours.

Outside of Newcastle College office hours, students and parents or carers can seek advice from the police on 101, as well as Newcastle Children's and Adult Services Emergency Duty Team via 0191 278 7878.

• If you’re travelling or walking somewhere you’re not familiar with, plan your journey using Google Maps and transport operator websites ahead of time.
• Use well-lit main roads wherever possible, even if the journey will take longer.
• Walk in groups or pairs if possible. If walking alone, try to stay close to more crowded areas and let someone know where you are and where you’re travelling to. If you have a smartphone, you can share your live location.
• Avoid using your phone in isolated places so you’re not distracted from your surroundings but keep it to hand should you need to call someone or the emergency services.

• If you’re waiting for public transport, use a busy bus stop or station wherever possible. If you miss your bus or train and need to take a taxi home, always use a trusted taxi company that you have booked yourself and check the registration and driver details before getting in the vehicle. Share these and your location with someone if possible.
• Sit close to the driver on public transport. If you are concerned about anything while travelling, you can use 101 to make a report on a bus, or text 61016 if you are travelling on a train.
• Always dial 999 if you need an urgent response. This may include if you witness a crime, someone is being threatened, is injured, or feels they are in danger in any way.
